Much is told of the breaking of the Fellowship and of the deeds beneath Amon Hen; yet of one small thing that passed there little is remembered.

For Boromir, son of Denethor, was wounded beyond all hope of healing, and the strength of his body was spent. And he spoke then of his failing, and of the grief that lay heavy upon him. But Aragorn did not rebuke him. He took his hand, and vowed that the White City should not fall, nor the people of Gondor be left without aid.

Then Boromir looked upon the Ranger and knew him at last for the king he had long awaited. And the burden that he had borne was lifted from him.

“I would have followed you, my brother,” he named him. “My captain. My king.”

“Be at peace... Son of Gondor,” Aragorn answered.

And when their words were ended, Aragorn drew near and kissed him upon the brow; and Boromir passed beyond the circles of the world in peace.

It was but a small tenderness between two great warriors, and no song was made of it. Yet perhaps there should have been. Thus has the deed been preserved, in ink and upon fine fabric, that it might not pass wholly from memory.
