About This Piece

Much is told of the breaking of the Fellowship and of the deeds beneath Amon Hen; yet of one small thing that passed there little is remembered.

For Boromir, son of Denethor, was wounded beyond all hope of healing, and the strength of his body was spent. And he spoke then of his failing, and of the grief that lay heavy upon him. But Aragorn did not rebuke him. He took his hand, and vowed that the White City should not fall, nor the people of Gondor be left without aid.

Then Boromir looked upon the Ranger and knew him at last for the king he had long awaited. And the burden that he had borne was lifted from him.

“I would have followed you, my brother,” he named him. “My captain. My king.”

“Be at peace... Son of Gondor,” Aragorn answered.

And when their words were ended, Aragorn drew near and kissed him upon the brow; and Boromir passed beyond the circles of the world in peace.

It was but a small tenderness between two great warriors, and no song was made of it. Yet perhaps there should have been. Thus has the deed been preserved, in ink and upon fine fabric, that it might not pass wholly from memory.

Product Lore

The Lord of the Rings has meant a lot to me for a long time. There are epic battles, eternal monsters, cosmic kings, ancient evils, and all the other things that make the story feel real. But over time, the moments that have burrowed a hobbit hole in my heart are usually the quiet ones.

Boromir's death is one of them.

He spends so much of the story carrying the weight of what he thinks he needs to be: strong enough to protect his people, worthy enough to save Gondor, proud enough to distrust the man who might one day become his king. And in the end, after failing and believing he's lost everything, Aragorn doesn't condemn him. He takes his hand. He reassures him. He tells him that his people will be protected.

And Boromir finally lets go.

There's something incredibly touching about that moment to me. Two warriors, surrounded by all this violence and mythology, sharing this small act of tenderness. No ego. No shame. Just love, forgiveness, respect, and peace.

That's why I wanted to draw this moment.

I could have drawn Boromir fighting off the uruks, or Aragorn bashing Lurtz. But the realest moment was just one man holding another as he dies, and giving him the peace he needed before he went.

“Be at peace, Son of Gondor.”

That line has always brings a tear and this piece is my little tribute to it.
